Weekly Roundup for week of Dec 11, 2011
The week between Christmas and New Year's, the Chevy Chase Community
Center
usually closes early. We are able to get some games in
but not our full complement of five.
Our friend Jason Keller, one of the top 100 rated players
in the U.S., who played in our April 2010 tournament in
Rockville, is on Jeopardy. He won last Friday (helped by
a "word origins" final question), and rumor has it that
he will be on all this coming week. We'll try to
see if we can have the TV on Tuesday at 7:30. Tune in
to root Jason on if you can.
Did any of you leave a clipboard with Scrabble score
sheets at our Dec. 10 tournament? Ted has it.
You can find the tournament results here.

Weekly Roundup for week of Aug 9, 2011
Many of our national tournament contingent should be back this
week.
We have penciled in a 1-day, 8-game rated tournament for Sat.,
Dec. 10, in Bethesda. Mark your calendars and stay tuned
for details.
See the national tournament results here.
Our big club winner was Mike Lean, who finished #3 in
Division 3 with a 21-10 record. The other local folks who
did best were Carole Denton, 17.5-13.5 in Div. 2 and
Gary Skowronski, 18-13 in Div. 3. Everyone else either
exceeded .500 barely, or got close. This includes
David Koenig, Bob Linn, and Brian Galebach in Div. 1, Stefan
Fatsis in Div. 2, and Ted Gest in Div. 3. In other
words, we all held our own.
Brian also ran a tag-team tournament and performed in
a duet of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto (he was the pianist).
And Stefan signed the new edition of "Word Freak."
So we had a strong presence in Dallas. Next year's
tourney is in Orlando.
See the latest edition of thelastwordnewsletter.com

Weekly Roundup for week of May 10, 2011
Thanks for everyone’s cooperation in finishing
all rounds by 9:45 last week so that our room
could be cleaned. Please do the same for director
Carole Denton this coming week.
Board of the week from Vince Castellano: a game
in which Stefan Fatsis defeats his daughter,
Chloe Fatsis.
Periodic warning on playing the blank:
In many old wooden tile sets, it may not
be clear when the blank really is a blank.
Two players called me over last Tuesday
after they discovered that a play made
several minutes earlier included a blank
that really wasn’t a blank. Someone had
inadvertently played a letter upside down.
It was too late then to challenge the
play. ALWAYS turn over a blank while there
still is time to challenge to make sure
it is a blank—that is perfectly acceptable
protocol.
Last but not least, there was yet another
brouhaha last week when several news stories
erroneously made no distinction between
the two different Scrabble dictionaries
and reported that 3,000 words are being
added, which is true for 2012 only in the
Collins dictionary, used in NON-North
America play. Our own Official Word List
Is not due for an update until 2013.
Here is a piece by Stefan Fatsis explaining
everything.

Weekly Roundup for week of May 3, 2011
D.C. has lost a staffer at the center, so we need
everyone's cooperation so that our room can
be cleaned before 10 p.m. First, could everyone
do better about cleaning up during the evening--
please don't leave paper, food items, etc.,
lying around. Secondly, we're going to try playing
the last round on one side of the room so the
center can start cleaning up the other side. We
may also start some pairings before 9 p.m.
Only by doing things like this can we preserve
our ability to offer up to 5 rounds every week. Thanks
to all.
Congrats to the Castellano family for winning
two divisions at York, Pa., on Saturday,
Josh with an 8-0 record and Vince 7-1.
Also: Adam Fine,
third in Div 3, 5-3, and Carol Tillson,
winning Div. 4, 6-2. Congrats to all.
Last Tuesday's board of the week:
Grant Guenzel beats Carole Denton,
382-376. Grant makes CRUCIBLE,
INFLATES, RESONANT, Carole
makes IMPORTS. (Don't we all wish
we got our blanks on different turns?)
Results for the evening, thanks to director

We’d like to hear from more people who can take part in our
inaugural 2-day Bethesda tournament on Mar. 19-20. See the
details at cross-tables.com or at the club. One division will feature
the first sanctioned Collins (international dictionary) tournament
in this area.

second in that division, 3-1, +292. Charlie Williamson and Jake
Radack were 2-2 +126, and Sam Masling and Sam Radack 2-2 +25.
Nathan Wagner and Kurt Knutsen were 7th in Division A. In Division C,
Chloe Fatsis and Lizzie Brennan were 2.5-1.5, +9. Vince Castellano
did the pairings, and Dave Koenig and Lily Gasperetti helped.
