You may have noticed that Christmas and New Year's Day
fall on Tuesdays. In the past we've sometimes arranged
to play at the community center another day on one or
both weeks.
Informal survey: Please message Ted Gest if you might be
interested in playing on Dec. 27 and/or Jan. 3 or 4.
Note that the center may close at 8 or 9 p.m. Dec. 27
so we'd have to play on an earlier schedule.
Reply only if your answer is yes or probably yes,
and please specify the date(s) you are interested.
Weekly Roundup for week of October 30, 2012
Three associated tournaments involving our
members took place this weekend.
Congrats to Josh Castellano for winning first place
in Div. 2 at the Eastern Shore tournament
with a 12-4 record. Carol Tillson took second
place in Div. 3 with an 11-5 mark, followed by
John Stinson, tied for 3rd with a 10-6 record.
You can see the full results at cross-tables.com
In the Collins branch of the tourney, held at
Bob Linn's in Potomac, Dave Koenig took
first with a 14-2 mark, winning his last
11 games consecutively. Bob was second
at 7-9, followed by Marcia Richards,
also at 7-9, and John Van Pelt, at 4-12.
We had a 5-person local club tournament
on the first day of the Collins event. Winning
that one was Gary Skowronski, 4-1. He
beat Grant Guenzel, also at 4-1, by 40
spread points. Adam Fine went 3-2,
Ted was 1-4, and Paula McMartin 0-4.
Then there was our Tuesday club session,
which was relocated to Paula McMartin's
building because Hurricane Sandy shut down
D.C. government facilities. Thanks, Paula.
We had a small but hardy crowd for that one:
Ted Gest 4 - 2 6 bingos
Ted Mast 3 - 2 11
Joanna Ward 2 - 2 2
Gary Emanuel 1 - 2 2
Paula McMartin 0 - 4
Here's the report from Chevy Chase last Tuesday;
thanks to co-director Marcia Bowen.
Weekly Roundup for week of August 14, 2012
For some, the big news out of the national tournament
in Orlando had to do with cheating, but for us
the news was that Sam Masling of our club
finished second in the 60-player Division 4
with a 21-10 record, +1466. Congratulations, Sam.
Unfortunately he missed first place by losing 3
times to Amalan Iyengar of North Carolina. In
one of those games, Sam extended SWITCHER
to SWITCHEROO for 42 points--and lost by 8.
Other notable performances:
Brian Galebach and Stefan Fatsis finishing
#10 and #13 respectively in the tough Div. 2;
Gary Skowronski and Adam Fine finishing
#8 and #12 in Div. 3, and David Koenig
6th in the Collins division, followed by
Marcia Richards at 7. (Marcia beat Dan
Milton by one point.)
As for the cheating, unfortunately that's
what the tournament has become publicly
known for; the close victory by Nigel
Richards by spread points in Div. 1 should
have had more attention, but you've probably
read and seen lots more about the "blanks" incident.
Here is Stefan Fatsis' take on Slate.
Connie Creed has announced a Nov. 2-4 tournament
on Maryland's Eastern Shore -- see cross-tables.com
for details.
Tat Reistrup is missing a Franklin electronic dictionary, which
she thinks may have been left at the club. It should have her
name on it. Anyone pick it up by mistake?

Weekly Roundup for week of June 19, 2012
Jason Bednarz, Chris Lipe, Gwen Stewart, and Dustin Dean won
divisions of the annual club summer tournament June 23-24 in
Bethesda, Md. The 14-game event was directed by Ted Gest and
Carole Denton. Bednarz also won the top division in the club's last
last summer tournament in July 2011. The victory by Dustin Dean
in Division C was notable because it was Dean’s first tournament.
Besides prizes for the first three places in each division, prizes were
given for high word and high game and special prizes in anticipation
of the presidential campaign for the best Obama word and best
Romney word. Full tentative results follow. Official results will be
reported to NASPA.

Meanwhile, from the Lauderhill, Fl., Scrabble Club,
our member Randy Scrabbleman Taylor, AKA
Dr. Dictionary, took on #6 ranked NASPA player
Ian Weinstein (rating 2030) and held Weinstein to
a 13-point win.
