Club 171: Our regular meeting is 5:30-10pm every Tuesday at the Chevy Chase Community Center. Please bring equipment if possible and contribute $1 toward photocopying, etc. Paired rounds begin at 5:30, about 6:15, 7:10, 8:05, and at 9pm sharp. If you arrive during a round, you will face a short wait for a game, but can partake of the snacks as you wait. Results from past play at Chevy Chase are shown below. The week of New Year's seems more likely because of shorter hours at the center the first week. The Castellano family did well at last Sunday's Philadelphia tournament. Vince won Div. 1 with a 7-0 record and Josh finished third in Div. 2 with a 5-2 mark. Congrats to both. The time commitment would be as low as one hour a week, in the late afternoon, and people can work with an afterschool coordinator to set a schedule that works for them. Coaches are asked to build students' Scrabble skills so they can be prepared to play competitvely in the spring. The School Scrabble website has lots of material for coaches, and Stefan Fatsis will provide some live training. Schools needing coaches are Jefferson MS, Bancroft ES, Takoma EC, Langdon EC, Columbia Heights EC, and West EC. In the past we've sometimes arranged to play at the community center another day on one or both weeks. Congrats to Josh Castellano for winning first place in Div. 2 at the Eastern Shore tournament with a 12-4 record. Carol Tillson took second place in Div. 3 with an 11-5 mark, followed by John Stinson, tied for 3rd with a 10-6 record. You can see the full results at cross-tables.com In the Collins branch of the tourney, held at Bob Linn's in Potomac, Dave Koenig took first with a 14-2 mark, winning his last 11 games consecutively. Bob was second at 7-9, followed by Marcia Richards, also at 7-9, and John Van Pelt, at 4-12. We had a 5-person local club tournament on the first day of the Collins event. Winning that one was Gary Skowronski, 4-1. He beat Grant Guenzel, also at 4-1, by 40 spread points. Adam Fine went 3-2, Ted was 1-4, and Paula McMartin 0-4. Then there was our Tuesday club session, which was relocated to Paula McMartin's building because Hurricane Sandy shut down D.C. government facilities. Thanks, Paula. Congratulations, Sam. Unfortunately he missed first place by losing 3 times to Amalan Iyengar of North Carolina. In one of those games, Sam extended SWITCHER to SWITCHEROO for 42 points--and lost by 8. Other notable performances: Brian Galebach and Stefan Fatsis finishing #10 and #13 respectively in the tough Div. 2; Gary Skowronski and Adam Fine finishing #8 and #12 in Div. 3, and David Koenig 6th in the Collins division, followed by Marcia Richards at 7. (Marcia beat Dan Milton by one point.) As for the cheating, unfortunately that's what the tournament has become publicly known for; the close victory by Nigel Richards by spread points in Div. 1 should have had more attention, but you've probably read and seen lots more about the "blanks" incident. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law and a sister, all in northern California. A short trip down memory lane: We held our first major tournament here in 2006, run by Alyssa Faria, Brian Bailey, Austin Nichols, and Ted Gest. We needed a bank account for this, so Brian, Lorraine and Ted met downtown to establish it. Then in 2007 we started our tournament-style format at our club, and decided to bring refreshments. Lorraine volunteered to collect our $1 contributions, and as many of you know, did this week after week for years. She also spent lots of time keeping track of tournament entry fees as we had many events in Maryland and during the summer in D.C. Lorraine took part in 10 rated tournaments from 2001 to 2008 and many of our unrated summer tournaments.
